TRAUMA EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Saint Joseph's Hospital offers a number of educational programs that specialize in trauma care.
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) This course is designed to provide core-level trauma knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with the delivery of nursing care to the trauma patient. This content is presented through lectures and psychomotor skills stations.
Course in Advanced Trauma Nursing (CATN) This course teaches psychophysiological concepts, which strengthen the critical decision-making skills necessary in trauma care. This course is typically held two times a year.
Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) This is a course designed to teach pre-hospital emergency providers how to assess and care for the multi-system trauma patient. The course is based on the Advanced Trauma Life Support course for physicians and has been developed by the American College of Surgeons.
Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) (on campus sponsored by Marshfield Clinic) This is a trauma course specifically designed for physicians. (Other health care professionals may audit the course.) The purpose of the course is to teach physicians the initial assessment and management of the trauma patient. The course emphasizes the urgency necessary to successfully manage outcomes for the injured patient. This course has been developed by the American College of Surgeons and is held twice a year.
Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) (on campus sponsored by Marshfield Clinic) This is a course sponsored by the Society of Critical Care Medicine and is designed for the general care provider and nurses in caring for a critically ill patient in the initial 24 hours of treatment. It reviews the basic principles of critical care management.
