TRAUMA CENTERS

Characteristics of Verified Trauma Centers include:

  • A comprehensive coordinated team of specialists who are immediately available 24/7.
  • Emergency Medicine Services in-house with additional trauma related education.
  • Specialized Trauma Surgeons who dedicate their time for caring for injured patients.
We are the only center in Central and Northern Wisconsin who has a team of surgeons dedicated to the care of the injured patient. All of our trauma surgeons have critical care or trauma fellowship training. This team of trauma surgeons/surgical intensivists provides care to the patients in our 26-bed surgical ICU – a rare find compared to other verified trauma centers.
  • Neurosurgery.
Neurosurgeons are available who are skilled, not only in all neurosurgical emergencies, but spine surgery and other neuro interventional procedures.
  • Orthopedic/Ortho-trauma Services.
We have two Orthopedists on staff specially trained in orthopedic trauma care, as well as comprehensive orthopedic coverage in pediatrics, shoulder, hand, foot/ankle and oncology.
  • Pediatric Intensivist
Pediatric intensivists provide specialized pediatric ICU and trauma care in our 8-bed PICU, in conjunction with the trauma surgeons – thus assuring the best care for those young lives.
  • The full range of specialty physicians needed in the care of the complex trauma patient includes:
    • Maxillofacial trauma call staffed by plastic and oral surgery.
    • Radiological services – CT scans, MRI, angiography, interventional radiology.
    • Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery.
  • Spirit Medical Transportation Services air and ground critical care transport.
Specialty trained RNs and paramedics are available to provide immediate trauma care at the scene or to facilitate the transfer of a patient from your facility to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
  • Comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation unit CARF certified – This unit is designed to meet the full continuum of care needed by trauma patients.
Nursing staff and support staff have received specialized training to care for the injured patient.
  • Concurrent Performance Improvement – The ability to extensively and continually review our performance to improve our systems of patient care.

Trauma centers are collaborative and integrated. This system starts with EMS and extends through the ER, ICU, Med/Surg units, Rehab and home. No trauma center would be complete without injury prevention programs. The Saint Joseph's Hospital Trauma Service team members play an active role in the development of the statewide trauma care system for Wisconsin through the North Central Regional Trauma Advisory Council (NCRTAC).
