Pediatric Nephrology Program The Pediatric Nephrology Program of Saint Joseph's Hospital and Marshfield Clinic offers a full array of services and a multidisciplinary team approach for children from neonates to adulthood who are affected by renal-related diseases.
As the only pediatric nephrology program in central and northern Wisconsin, the staff works directly and closely with the family and referral physicians to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Both inpatient and outpatient services are provided by a comprehensive team including:

- Acute inpatient dialysis
- Hemodialysis

- Continuous renal replacement therapy

- Chronic outpatient hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in a new off-campus Dialysis Center, offering a child-friendly atmosphere
Clinical services include:
- Hypertension: Comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and individualized treatment for infants, children and adolescents with sustained hypertension. Services include ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography and comprehensive imaging capabilities.
- Proteinuria: Evaluation of children and adolescents with persistent proteinuria, combined hematuria and proteinuria as well as children with suspected chronic renal disease.
- Hematuria: Evaluation of children and adolescents with persistent microscope hematuria, macroscopic hematuria, macroscopic hematuria, combined hematuria and proteinuria or renal impairment.
- Nephrotic Syndrome: Diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with all forms of nephrotic syndrome.
- Glomerulonephritis: Diagnosis and treatment of acute or chronic glomerulonephritis. Renal biopsy, dialysis and medical therapy are available.
- Chronic renal insufficiency: Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of children at risk for chronic renal impairment due to systemic illnesses including systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes mellitus, Henoch-Schoenlein Purpura, etc.
- Non-surgical uropathies: Evaluation and treatment of children with vesicoureteral reflux, hydronephrosis, dysplasia, hypoplasia and other uropathies. Children with surgically corrected uropathies with residual renal impairment receive ongoing care and monitoring.
- Vesicoureteral reflux: Management of children with all grades of vesicoureteral reflux. Surgical referral for appropriate children provided.
- Renal tubular acidosis: Evaluation and treatment of children with persistent acidosis suspected to have renal tubular acidosis.
- Kidney stones: Evaulation and treatment of children with all forms of nephrolithiasis or idiopathic hypercalcuria.
- Recurrent UTIs: Treatment of voiding disorders, recurrent UTI and non-surgical urologic disease. Care for children requiring urologic surgical care is coordinated with skilled urologists.
- Enuresis, daytime and nocturnal: Children with enuresis who have failed standard therapy of metabolic bone disorders resulting in rickets, renal osteodystrophy or adynamic bone disease.
- Steroid induced osteopenia: Monitoring and treatment of steroid induced bone disease for children and adolescents currently receiving or previously treated with long-term steroid therapy.
- Dialysis: Acute, chronic and continuous renal replacement therapies for infants, children and adolescents with renal failure.
- Follow-up post-renal transplantation: Long-term management for transplant patients. Care is coordinated with the primary care physician, transplant center and Marshfield.
- Therapeutic Apheresis: Therapeutic plasmapheresis and leucopheresis (leuco-reduction therapy) for children and adolescents.
