PEDIATRIC UNIT

The Pediatric Unit was planned and organized to resemble a small community in Central Wisconsin.

When you arrive on the unit you will find yourself in Auxiliary Park. The Park features a bank of birch trees, a water fountain and park benches. This atmosphere provides a nice quiet, subdued place for parents and families to visit. The Park is sponsored by Partners with Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Children's Miracle Network Backyard
Being stuck in a hospital room for any length of time can be hard, especially when you are a child! Fortunately, Children's Miracle Network (CMN) felt that way as well, and funded an outdoor play area called the CMN Backyard. Located on the roof just outside the Pediatric Unit, the fenced in "yard" features a telescope, megaphones, and other safety tested playground equipment.

Play Room Teen Lounge
Our Teen Lounge is for children 12 years of age and older. A foosball table, computer, and a variety of games and activities are available for the teens, their friends and families.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The PICU, with six beds, provides all of the state-of-the-art equipment needed to care for critically ill or injured children. The Unit contains nursing sub-stations with computer access, allowing caregivers to keep in visual contact with patients while doing charting.

Main Street & Town Square
The Pediatric Town Clock is a focal point of the Town Square and Main Street Area. Of special interest to youngsters are the three "mice" featured near the base of the clock. Unlike the nursery rhyme, however, these mice are not blind, but rather quite playful, as they swing on the clock's pendulum and gears.

The Clock was donated by the Jeff and Janice Moen family of Marshfield. The Moen's dedicated The Clock to the pediatric nursing and support staff for the special care given to their daughter, Dawn, who died at age 18 from chronic illness.

The main part of the Nurse's Station resembles that of a main street, with brown carpeting simulating the cobble-stone road and red carpeting simulating the path that people walk on to get to their destination.

Across from the Nurse's Station are rooms for infants and toddlers. These rooms have windows on the outside to allow healthcare providers to observe the children without disturbing them. They also are designed to accommodate parents who might wish to spend the night.

The Northern Lights
The Northern Light rooms provide seven beds for school age and adolescent patients. The rooms in this area are all private and contain a full bath. Each room has a TV-VCR and, a sleeper seating couch for family and visitors.

The Northern Lights area has incorporated simulated northern lights and a solar system into the decorating scheme. It features globe ceilings which dim and a solar system that glows in the dark.

The Cabin
The Cabin is primarily the Oncology/Hematology area where children with cancer, blood disorders, or immune problems are admitted. The positive pressure in these six rooms allows the air in this area to cycle through to become more purified for those patients who might have a poor immune system.

The Cabin depicts more of an isolated, quiet atmosphere off in the northern woods of Wisconsin. These six rooms all have full baths, a couch-chair for parents to spend the night and a TV-VCR.

The Solarium
The enclosed and private Solarium, located next door to the CMN Backyard, allows young Oncology/Hematology pateints to enjoy their own little bit of sunshine in a controlled environment. Like the oncology patient rooms, the Solarium features a positive pressure, filtered air system. It not only purifies the air inside, it doesn't allow potentially contaminated outside air to enter.

The Solarium has a Nintendo 64, stereo, and a variety of toys, games, and books. There is also a computer with internet access and a Cancer Help Kiosk has is also available to help patients look up information.
