about Pallidotomy and
Deep Brain Stimulation

Specialists from the Marshfield Clinic have developed expertise in stereotactic, microelectrode-guided ventrolateral pallidotomy for alleviation of many of the symptoms of these disabling diseases. We have now (as of 6/99) completed over 100 successful pallidotomies and deep brain stimulator implantations, with minimal complications. The majority of patients have experienced marked and almost immediate improvement in their symptoms. Most patients are able to go home the following day, requiring on average half the medications that they came in on. An occasional patient will improve so dramatically that medications can be discontinued. Pallidotomy involves the precise placement of a thermal lesion within an area of the brain which has become overactive in Parkinson's Disease. Reducing the brain cell activity within this area can substantially improve function in patients with this disease.
