Linda Cook is no stranger to the fight against breast cancer. Along with personally being a breast cancer survivor, she lost her mother, Myra Hansen, her sister, Diane Hansen Fuller, and a dear friend, Dorothy Price to this devastating disease. While battling breast cancer, she was given three very special blankets to let her know that she was not alone. One blanket had been Dorothy’s and given to Linda after Dorothy passed away. Another blanket was from a former student and the third blanket her “Victory Blanket” from a friend. These gifts, all gestures of kindness and support, made such a difference in her life.
Recently, Linda came to Saint Michael’s Foundation with an idea to provide the same kind of comfort to Saint Michael’s patients that she was given during her treatments. Out of that meeting, Project Embrace was established. Project Embrace will provide beautiful pink ribbon blankets to each patient being treated for breast cancer at Saint Michael’s Hospital. The blankets are purchased from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a true leader in the fight against breast cancer. The Komen Foundation will use the proceeds from the sale of its blankets to support breast cancer research and education programs. Linda generously provided the funding to purchase the first 40 blankets and will give the first 10 blankets to women in her cancer support group here in Stevens Point.
For information on how you can support Project Embrace and the women battling breast cancer, please contact Saint Michael’s Foundation at 715.343.3259. All donations remain in Stevens Point and will be distributed through the Cancer Center at Saint Michael’s Hospital.
