Kindergarten students in the Marshfield School District will receive books and learn about fire and burn injury prevention thanks to a grant received by the Trauma Services Injury Prevention Program at Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Marshfield.
Amy Schmidt, BSN, RN, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, received the $500 grant from the Wisconsin American Trauma Society. It will provide two books entitled “Brecker Bunny Learns to Be Careful: A Lesson in Fire and Burn Safety,” to each kindergarten class in the Marshfield School District.
During February, with February 1-7 being National Burn Awareness Week, the students will each get a chance to take the book home for a specified time, where they can read it with their parents. They will then write a fire prevention safety tip and bring it back to school.
In addition, Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, in partnership with Safe Kids Wood County, distributed books and materials to the remaining 37 kindergarten classes in Wood County. Combined, the program will reach nearly 960 students and their families.
To kick off the week, Schmidt will be reading the book and talking about fire and burn safety to the kindergarten classes at Lincoln Elementary School in Marshfield, at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2. Reading with her will be Laura Gleisner, who was burned as a two-year-old.
You are welcome to attend Schmidt’s presentation at Lincoln School for a story and/or photos/video.
