Meet Our Residents

Amy Dietzel, Pharm.D., RPh.

Education:

Undergraduate/Pre-pharmacy – University of Wisconsin-Madison
Pharm.D. (2009) – University of Wisconsin-Madison

A little about myself:

My hometown is Watertown, Wisconsin. In my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. I also love to travel and spend time outdoors hiking, boating, and camping.

Why did I choose to do a residency?

I chose to do a residency because I feel that residency is a great learning opportunity. A residency program provides opportunities for the continual development of clinical knowledge and for the further development of practice skills. It also allows new pharmacists to explore different specialties within the pharmacy profession and to be involved with a variety of projects and administrative activities. Lastly, I believe that a residency will better prepare me to practice in a hospital or health-system setting.

Why did I choose Saint Joseph’s Hospital?

I chose to apply at Saint Joseph’s Hospital because I was impressed by the variety of opportunities that were available, including opportunities in my interest areas of critical care and pediatrics. After meeting the residency director, current residents, and other pharmacy staff involved with the residency program it was clear that the program would be a good fit for me based on my values and goals for the residency year. Residents are a valuable part of the St. Joseph’s pharmacy team, as evidenced by the recent expansion of the program to include a third PGY-1 resident as well as a PGY-2 administrative residency position.

What rotations will I be doing?

I will be doing rotations in pharmacokinetics/nutritional support, pain service/perianesthesia, pediatrics, cardiology, adult surgical/trauma intensive care, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, and internal medicine. In addition, I will be staffing every third weekend on TPN/Kinetics or in the emergency department.

Future plans/interests:

I plan to practice in a hospital or health-system setting at a location yet to be determined.

Brian Lang, Pharm.D., RPh.

Education:

Undergraduate: University of Wisconsin – Madison
PharmD: University of Wisconsin – Madison

A little about myself:

I grew up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I enjoy sailing, anything else outdoors, reading, and finding good music.

Why did I choose to do a residency?

I decided during pharmacy school that I enjoy hospital pharmacy. During my rotations last year, I realized that the more I know, the more I can make a difference in patients’ lives. A residency allows me to not only experience and become proficient in a wide variety of clinical pharmacist roles, and to discover what specialties most interest me.

Why did I choose Saint Joseph’s Hospital?

Since Saint Joseph’s is a large hospital as well as the only major trauma center in a large region, it provides an excellent opportunity to be involved with a very diverse patient population. The extensive decentralization of the pharmacy department is also an advantage. The excellent pharmacy staff is dedicated to providing a challenging and rewarding residency experience.

What rotations will I be doing?

SICU, Metabolic Support/Kinetics, Cardiology/CCU, Pediatrics, St. Clare’s Hospital, MICU, Medicine, and Infectious Disease

Future plans/interests:

My plans for after residency are undecided, but I plan to be in a clinical pharmacist position.

Pam Lensing, Pharm.D.

Education:

Undergraduate: University of Minnesota, Duluth
Pharm.D. at University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy, Duluth

A little about myself:

I was born and raised in Mounds View, Minnesota. I enjoy playing and coaching soccer. I also love to run, hike, downhill ski, and ice skate.

Why did I choose to do a residency?

I choose a residency to find the best fit for me as a clinical pharmacist. I am interested in hospital pharmacy, but wanted to gain more experience on certain specialties before entering clinical practice. I am looking forward to learn about specialties that I did not cover as thoroughly on my rotations as a student, such as oncology, pediatrics and the emergency department. I feel as a resident you get many learning experiences that are not seen on a regular basis as a pharmacist.

Why did I choose Saint Joseph’s Hospital?

As I was looking for residency programs, I found Saint Joseph’s Hospital to be the best fit for me. During the interview process, St. Joseph’s pharmacy staff was friendly and welcoming. Everyone that I interviewed with wanted to be and stay at St. Joseph's Hospital. I learned that the program could be personalized to meet my needs, which helped in my decision. St Joseph’s Hospital also had the opportunity to work with St. Clare’s Hospital, another Ministry Health Care hospital. This hospital has unique opportunities such as learning about CPOE, different clinical opportunities and warfarin discharge counseling.

What rotation will I be doing?

I will be doing rotations in cardiology, adult surgical/trauma intensive care, pediatrics, pharmacokinetics/nutritional support, acute care/internal medicine, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, information technology, and emergency department. In addition, I will be staffing every other Friday and Saturday at St. Clare’s in Weston.

Future plans/interests:

At this point, I enjoy many aspects of pharmacy and am excited to go through all the rotations to learn what will be the best fit for me. I am thrilled to be at Saint Joseph’s Hospital to continue my learning and can’t wait to see what the future will hold for me.
