Perspectives of an Oncology Nurse

Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield has more oncology certified advance practice nurses than any facility in the region.

Inpatient and outpatient cancer services offer continuity and continuum of care so the patient and family member develop close, bonding relationships with caregivers. These bonds result from a philosophy of treating the patient AND tending to the needs of the entire family. When communicating test results or discussing treatment options, physicians and nurses include family members in the process.

The oncology/hematology unit is a 36-bed unit. General medical patient population includes tumors (i.e. lung, prostate), blood malignancies (i.e. leukemia, multiple myeloma), DVT, anemia, malignant and non-malignant pain, dementia, etc. Typical treatment modalities include chemotherapy, bracytherapy, and human progenitor cell transplants. On the outpatient Unit, there are five chairs: blood transfusion and IV infusion (includes antibiotics and chemotherapy).
