Saint Elizabeth’s Receives $200,000 Gift

“Saint Elizabeth’s has always been there for us,” shares Irene Brunkow. “It was our turn to give back.” That’s how she sees it. That’s how her late husband, Willard, would have too. The Brunkows have been long-time users of the medical system in Wabasha. Residents of Trempealeau and Nelson, Wisconsin for much of their lives, they found something different when crossing the river for their care.

“We always felt well cared for,” says Irene. “I delivered all my children at Saint Elizabeth’s. We had surgeries and other services too. Everyone at Saint Elizabeth’s really cares. They know you by name and treat you like family. Along the way, we made good friends. I had a close relationship with Sister Gerina. She was a dear women and an excellent caregiver. When I came over for lung treatments, we would talk about all kinds of things. Later, we met Tom Crowley and formed another friendship.”

Over a year ago, when Irene’s doctor told her that her heart couldn’t handle living at home anymore, she really never questioned where she would set up residence. Now living in an assisted living apartment, Irene feels right at home. “I like it here. I feel safe, it’s comfortable, and medical care is convenient.”

Before Willard died they talked about how they could help Saint Elizabeth’s. The Brunkows supported many previous campaigns – assisted living expansion, cardiac rehab, mammography, and others. Willard wanted to make sure their support continued after he was gone.

The answer came at an auxiliary meeting when members received an invitation to support a new capital improvement project - the expansion and renovation of surgical services. At that meeting, Saint Elizabeth’s Auxiliary unanimously agreed to pledge $50,000 to the project. Afterwards, Irene – who was in attendance - called Tom.

She asked for more figures and details. Although Irene never shared her husband’s passion for the stock market and The Wall Street Journal, she did want to make an informed decision about investing in the project.

“Tom sat down with me and explained why the surgery expansion was so important and why community support would help make it happen. He had a good plan and I was confident that our donation would help Saint Elizabeth’s and please Willard. It feels good to give to people who believe in doing good things.”

“Irene and Willard have been strong supporters of Saint Elizabeth’s,” says Tom Crowley. “Their $200,000 gift is a real boost to our project. We are grateful to them and to all our donors who believe in our mission and help us carry on the legacy of the sisters.”
