Lifeline Volunteers Needed in Portage County

Independence and good health mean so much to each of us. Yet, we often take these precious gifts for granted, until we are in jeopardy of losing them.

Lifeline provides a 24-hour personal emergency response service to people who want to continue to live independently, but are disabled, elderly, or medically at-risk. The service provides a small device that is worn by the individual; when the button is pushed, an alert activates assistance by trained professionals any time of day or night.

Ministry Home Care, in partnership with Saint Michael’s Hospital, offers Lifeline services to the people of Portage County. The program relies on specially-trained volunteers to travel to subscribers’ homes to install the devices, teach the subscribers how to use the system, and check on them if and when concerns arise. In addition, volunteers are helpful in assisting with clerical duties at the Ministry Home Care office. Volunteers are called on to assist as the needs arise, and schedules are very flexible.

Volunteering for Lifeline is a great opportunity to make personal connections with individuals, helping them to retain their independence. All volunteers are provided with a thorough orientation and ongoing support. Couples are encouraged to volunteer together, if they choose.
